VOICES OF BLACK THEATRE

Fade to Black

Black Theatre is a performance by, for, and about African Americans - serving as a ritual that channels the legacy of descendants of the transatlantic slave trade to heal from past traumas and honor the resilient spirit of Black liberation.

By its power of depiction and cultural preservation, Black theatre provided a social platform before the advent of media.  Owing to the fact that dramatic performance is a living archive, its evolution continues.  Yet, the challenges Black theatre faced over 50 years ago are still experienced today.  This film examines the “how” and celebrates the “why” of Black theatre’s enduring will to create, share and control Black narratives.
